[edit]From ἐπι- (epi-, “on, upon; on top of; all over”) + κοινός (koinós, “common; general, public”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (“beside, by, near, with”) + *-yós (suffix forming adjectives from noun stems). Compare γένος ἐπίκοινον (génos epíkoinon, “common gender”).
