Etymology
[edit]From 上 (uwa-, the 被覆形 (hifukukei, “bound form”) of 上 (ue, “up; top”)) + 着 (-gi, “clothes; wear”, from the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 着る (kiru, “to wear”)). The ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
