Etymology

/japaraɡu//jafaraɡu//jawaraɡu/

From Old Japanese. Derived from adjective and adverb 柔ら (yawara, soft; gentle), in turn derived from adjective , (yawa, soft; gentle; fragile).[1][2] Cognate with 弱い (yowai, weak; fragile).
