Borrowed from Eastern Min 一百零八 (siŏh-báh lìng báik),[1][2] probably via Okinawan.[2]

This reading first appears as 一百零八(スーパーリンパイ) (sūpārinpai) in the 1930s; before that, the reading is unclear, but it was probably Sino-Japanese ippyakureihachi.[3]
