Etymology

From 妹子 (mèizi, “younger sister, young female”), with replacement of the diminutive suffix (, “child, son”) by the close-sounding retroflexed counterpart (zhǐ, “paper”). See also 孩紙孩纸 (háizhǐ, “child, kid”).
