Etymology

[edit]

Compound of 夜這い (yobai, courtship; marriage proposal) +‎ (fumi, a letter, an epistle).[1][2][3][4] The fumi changes to bumi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited to the Utsubo Monogatari of the late 900s.[1][2]

Appears to be falling out of use, as no pitch-accent information is included for this term in various Japanese dictionaries.[1][4][5][6]
