Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) and ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : semantic (gas) + abbreviated phonetic (dilute).

Etymology

From (dàn, “dilute”) in 淡氣淡气 [19th c.], referring to nitrogen diluting oxygen in the air.
