These are uncommon kanji, the hyōgaiji ( (ひょう) (がい) ()) – those kanji not part of the jinmeiyō kanji (kanji approved for names) or jōyō kanji or tōyō kanji (commonly used kanji, everyday kanji) lists.

These are written in kyūjitai ( (きゅう) () (たい), traditional characters), and are seen in literature and in names of places; a few are in more general use. Sometimes called grade 9.
