Etymology[edit]

Of ()(えい) (jiei, self-defense) + (かん) (kan, official). Various offices (e.g. 陸上自衛官 rikujō jiekan “ground forces commander”, 海上自衛官 kaijō jiekan “naval forces commander”, 航空自衛官 kōkū jiekan “airforce commander”) defined in Japanese law from 1954.
