So named as each stanza of the ballad ends with the phrase of:
蓮花落,落蓮花。 [MSC, trad.]
莲花落,落莲花。 [MSC, simp.]- Liánhuā lào, lào liánhuā. [Pinyin]
- Lotus flowers fall, and so fall the lotus flowers.
