Etymology[edit]

Composed of 西 (sai1, “west”) and 營盤 (jing4 pun4, “camp”), as a fortification set up by pirates in present day Sai Ying Pun.[1] A commonly cited folk etymology is that Sai Ying Pun is named after a military camp established by the early British military at West Point (西角, now a disused placename), a location west of Possession Point (水坑口).
