Etymology

Originally an Old Japanese compound of かぐ (kagu, obsolete verb root meaning “to shine, to sparkle”, seen in modern verbs 耀う kagayou, 輝く kagayaku “to shine, to sparkle”) +‎ (tsu, Old Japanese possessive particle) +‎ (chi, power, life force, found as root component in terms inochi “life”, chikara “power, strength”).[1] The kanji are ateji (当て字).
