Etymology
Originally an Old Japanese compound of かぐ (kagu, obsolete verb root meaning “to shine, to sparkle”, seen in modern verbs 耀う kagayou, 輝く kagayaku “to shine, to sparkle”) + つ (tsu, Old Japanese possessive particle) + ち (chi, “power, life force”, found as root component in terms 命 inochi “life”, 力 chikara “power, strength”).[1] The kanji are ateji (当て字).
