Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Sanskrit धर्म (dharma, law; morality; code), either via Middle Chinese 達磨 (MC dɑt̚ muɑ) as a transliteration of the Sanskrit,[1] or as a clipping of 菩提達磨 (Bodaidaruma), in turn from Middle Chinese 菩提達磨 (MC buo dei dɑt̚ muɑ) as a transliteration from Sanskrit.[2][3]
