Etymology[edit]
Apparently coined in Japan from Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of 鉄 (tetsu, “iron, steel”) + 扇 (sen, “fan, folding fan”).

- Various types existed, including folding fans with blades of wood and ribs of metal, folding fans with ribs of wood and blades of metal, folding fans made entirely of metal, solid fans made of both wood and metal or entirely of metal, and a variety made of metal and used more like a truncheon, but made to look like a folded fan.
