Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 모ᄃᆞᆫ〮 (Yale: mwòtón), originally the realis adnominal inflection of the verb 몯다〮 (mwòttá, to gather, to assemble), hence literally "[the] assembled", but never perceived as such by modern speakers.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈmo̞(ː)dɯn]
    • (file)
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
