Korean

Etymology 1

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 묻다 (Yale: mwut.ta). Perhaps related to Middle Chinese (MC mjunH).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈmu(ː)t̚t͈a̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.

Usage notes

To avoid confusion with 물다 (mulda, “to bite”), as in many conjugations both verbs sound and are spelled alike (both have the stem 물어 (mureo) due to irregular conjugations), in most usages the verb is combined with 보다 (boda, “to try”) to form 물어보다 (mureoboda) to form the same meaning.
