Sino-Korean word from 半島, from 半 (“half”) + 島 (“island”). Possibly a calque of a Western word such as peninsula or Halbinsel.

- Phonetic hangeul: [반(ː)도]
- Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, the great majority of speakers (in both Koreas) no longer distinguish vowel length.

- (by extension) Korean peninsula
