Etymology 1[edit]
By analogy with 일반(一般) (ilban), swapping the first character 一 (il, “one”) with 二 (i, “two”) or 異 (i, “different”).

- Phonetic hangul: [이(ː)반]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
