Etymology[edit]
Disputed. Seemingly cognate with Latin ostendΕ (βto showβ), maintaining the literal sense of obs- (βforewardβ) + tendΕ (βstretchβ).[1][2] By some connected with Proto-Italic *tolnΕ, hence a formation parallel to Latin offerΕ (βto offerβ), perfect stem obtul-.[2][3]
