From Proto-Germanic *sternวญ, from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚‚stแธ—r. Cognate to Crimean Gothic stein (misprint for *stern). Identical in formation to Old Norse stjarna, and, more distantly, cognate to Koine Greek แผ€ฯƒฯ„ฮฎฯ (astแธ—r), which it translates.
