Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰéh₁i-to-m (“that which is suckled”), derivation of the root *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suck, suckle”). Anatolian cognates include Cuneiform Luwian 𒋾𒄿𒋫𒀭 (tītan-, “breast, teat”) and Lycian 𐊘𐊆𐊅𐊁𐊆𐊎𐊆 (τideimi, “son, child”).

Indo-European cognates include Latin fēmina (“woman”), fīlius (“son”), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, “to suck”), Ancient Greek θάομαι (tháomai, “to suck”) and Old Church Slavonic доити (doiti, “to suckle”).
