Learnedly, from Ancient Greek συνεχής (sunekhḗs), from συνέχω (sunékhō, to hold, to keep together), combined form of συν- (sun-, together, with) + ἔχω (ékhō, to have, to hold). Compare Latin contineō (to hold, to keep together), combined form of con- (together, with) + teneō (to have, to hold).
