Finnish

Etymology

From the essive suffix -na + -tua. The suffix can also be interpreted as -ntaa + -ua, but the three core elements are still the same: essive -na, causative -ta(a) and passive -ua. Traditionally a western dialectal form; eastern dialects preferred -utua.

Suffix

-ntua (front vowel harmony variant -ntyä, linguistic notation -ntUA)

  1. Forms reflexive or inchoative intransitive verbs.
