Etymology[edit]

The o vowel of future-tense -os plus the nt of the Latin/Romance active present participle.

Suffix[edit]

-ont-

  1. (agentic substantive) -onto Nominative do'er of an action, in a future relative to when the corresponding verb took place.
    Example: ami (to love), amonto (a future lover)
    Mi estis amonton.
    I was a future lover.
  2. (adjectival participle) -onta Characteristic of doing an action, in a future relative to the verb. (active future participle)
    Example: ami (to love), amonta (future loving)
  3. (adverbial participle) -onte In a way characteristic of doing an action, in a future relative to the verb. (active future adverbial participle)
    Example: ami (to love), amonte (in a way characterized by future loving)
    Mi estis amikon amonte.I was a friend in a way characterized by future loving.

Usage notes[edit]

Even if the word takes the accusative form (e.g. amonton or amontan), the word forms a substantive or adjective as-if a nominative for the participle's root.
