Bikol Central
Verb
kaag (kaág)
Dutch
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch câech, from Old Dutch kāg, from Old Frisian, from Proto-Germanic *kaugi, *kauga, of uncertain ultimate origin. Proposed connections include *kagilaz (“stake, post, pole”) (which would make it a doublet of kegel (“cone”)), or possibly related to *kēguz (“stake, post”); see Old English cæg. However, because of the difficulties in sound laws and semantics in these connections, it is probably rather from a Northwestern European substrate word.[1]
Confer German Koog and Danish kog.
Noun
kaag f or m (plural kagen)
Alternative forms
Etymology 2
Of obscure origin, but probably related to Old Norse kaggi (“vessel, cask”).
Noun
kaag f (plural kagen, diminutive kaagje n)
- (historical) A small single-masted flat-bottomed merchant sailing boat with leeboards, intended for coastal and inland shipping.
- Synonyms: kaagschip, kaagschuit
