Inherited from the Ancient Greek πώλης (pṓlēs), from πωλέω (pōléō, to sell, to offer for sale).

  1. Used to form shop owner, retailer, etc:
    χαρτί (chartí, paper) + ‎-πώλης (-pólis) → ‎χαρτοπώλης (chartopólis, stationer)
    βιβλίο (vivlío, book) + ‎-πώλης (-pólis) → ‎βιβλιοπώλης (vivliopólis, bookseller)
