orbiton (plural orbitons)

  1. (physics) A quasiparticle, corresponding to the orbital energy of an electron, which can result from an electron apparently ‘splitting’ under certain conditions.
    • 2012, BBC News online, 18 Apr 2012:
      Two such quasi-particles had been seen before, but a team reporting in Nature has now confirmed a third: the orbiton.
