From the locative singular of ऋत (ṛtá, met with, afflicted by), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁- (to separate). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐρῆμος (erêmos, lonesome, solitary), Latin rārus (far apart, rare) (English rare).
