Etymology

From वि- (ví-) +‎ , plus an uncertain second element which has been theorized to be a fossilized Proto-Indo-European ablative suffix *-neh₁, related to Proto-Germanic *-nē (cf. *-anē, *fanē) and perhaps Latin *-nē in supernē.
