قلنسوة
Arabic
Alternative forms
- قُلَنْسِيَة (qulansiya)
Etymology
Of uncertain etymology, derived from a conflation of Aramaic קולסיתה and Aramaic קולנייא both forms of unknown origin with suggested connections to:
- Latin calautica (“coif”) in particular its Vulgar Latin calantica form
- possibly Ancient Greek κόρῠς (kórus, “helm, headgear”)
- seeming to be a Persian headdress in particular suggests such a source; perhaps ultimately from Middle Persian [script needed] (kwlʾp̄ /kulāf, kulāv, kulāw/, “cap, bonnet”) or Middle Persian [script needed] (kwlʾc /kulāč/, “bun, round bulb; hence a base to wrap a turban around”), cognate with Persian کلاه
Source of Hebrew קַלַנְסֻוָה (qalansuwā) borrowing.
