Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ɲaːʔ (sap; resin; drug), from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Khmu [Cuang] krɲaʔ ("resin used to catch animals").

The adjectival sense derived from the stickiness/viscosity of resin.
