Etymology

Orthographic borrowing from English sauce and French sauce, both ultimately from Latin salsus (salted), from saliō (I salt), from sāl (salt). Compare German Soße, Polish sos, Russian соус (sous), Italian salsa, Spanish salsa, Yiddish סאָס (sos). Doublet of salo and salso.
