Inherited from Old East Slavic сочиво (sočivo, “lentil seed”). Cognate with Bulgarian сочиво́ (sočivó, “soup”), Serbo-Croatian со̏чиво (“lentils, legumes”), Slovene sočȋvo (“lentils, legumes”). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *sokъ (“juice”).
