Learned borrowing from New Latin caveola, constructed from cavea (“hollow, cavity; cage”) + -ola (diminutive suffix). Doublet of jail, which is from Vulgar Latin *caveola, an earlier, natural formation of the same term. More at cave, cavum, cava and cage.
