Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *albʰós (“white”). Cognates include Latin albus (“white”), Hittite 𒀠𒉺𒀸 (alpas, “cloud”), Umbrian 𐌀𐌋𐌚𐌖 (alfu, “white”) and Middle Welsh elbid (“world”). Doublet of ἄλβος (álbos).
