Inherited from Old East Slavic спѣшити (spěšiti), Proto-Slavic *spěšiti (to hurry), from *spěxъ (haste), from *spěti (to advance, ripen, hurry) + *-xъ. Equivalently from спех (spex), from спеть (spetʹ).
