From хлопоты (xlopoty) +‎ -ать (-atʹ). Originally from клопота́ть (klopotátʹ) with an expressive "х" instead of "к". Cognates include Ukrainian клопота́ти (klopotáty, to bother, to force to work), Bulgarian клопотя́ (klopotjá, to bring to tears), Czech klороtаti (to knock).
