Punjabi

Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic شَهِيد (šahīd), literally "witness".

Noun

شَہِید (śahīdm (Gurmukhi spelling ਸ਼ਹੀਦ)

  1. martyr
    • Bhai Gurdas, translation by Dr Jodh Singh, Varan Bhai Gurdas, page 3:
مردہ ہوئے مرید نہ گلیں ہوونا صابر صدق شہید بھرم بھؤ کھوونا
murdā hoe murīd na galī̃ hovṇā sābar sidak shahīd bharam bhau khovṇā
Only by becoming dead in life, i.e. totally detached, and not through mere verbal jargon one can become a true disciple. One could be such a person only after getting sacrificed for truth and contentment and by eschewing delusions and fears.
