Proto-Slavic
Etymology
- Meillet, Vasmer, Georgiev, Snoj: From Proto-Indo-European *wēdróm. Parallel to Ancient Greek ὑδρία (hudría, “water vessel”) (0-grade) and akin to Latin unda, Ancient Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr), Proto-Germanic *watōr, Sanskrit उदन् (udan), Hittite 𒉿𒀀𒋻 (wa-a-tar).
- Derksen: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēˀdera (“belly, stomach”), from Proto-Indo-European *úderos (“abdomen, stomach”), from *úd (“out, outward”) + *-eros (contrastive suffix). Baltic cognates include Latvian vȩ̂dȩrs, vȩ̂dars, Lithuanian vė́deras and Old Prussian weders. Indo-European cognates include Latin uterus, Ancient Greek ὕδερος (húderos) and Sanskrit उदर (udara).
