Perhaps from French mélange (mixture) + English -ian; perhaps from Arabic مَلْعُون جِنّ (malʕūn jinn, lost soul, cursed soul), from مَلْعُون (malʕūn, cursed) + جِنّ (jinn, jinns); perhaps from malengine; perhaps from melongene; or perhaps none of these.
