From Middle Dutch conijn, from earlier Middle Dutch conin, from Old French connin, a variant of Old French conil, from Latin cuniculus, from Ancient Greek κύνικλος (kúniklos), probably of Iberian or Celtiberian origin. Cognate to English cony, German Kaninchen, Spanish conejo and Portuguese coelho (rabbit).
