Etymology

From Old Norse tapa (to lose), cognate with Norwegian Bokmål tape and Swedish tappa. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *tapōną, *tappōną, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₂p (to sacrifice, lose), cf. Latin damnum (loss) = Old Norse tafn (sacrificial meat).
