From Proto-Indo-European *misdʰós, from Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to exchange). Cognates include Proto-Indo-Iranian *miždʰám, Proto-Germanic *mizdō (meed) and Old Church Slavonic мьзда (mĭzda, reward).
