Related to the milk-giving qualities of these plants, compare the Spanish name of the spurge lechetrezna; but possibly from Classical Syriac, ܚܰܠܒ݂ܳܐ (ḥalbā, “milk”), construct state ܚܠܷܒ (ḥăleḇ), also meaning “spurge” in compounds.
