open compound (plural open compounds)

  1. (grammar) A compound word or term with spaces in it (for example, hang out, school bus, science fiction); the overall term may contain a smaller open compound adjunct (that is, a noun phrase in attributive position), as with school bus and school bus traffic stop laws.
