yhdyssana
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]yhdys- (“connected, combined, united”) + sana (“word”). Coined by Finnish folklorist and linguist Daniel Europaeus in 1853.[1]
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈyhdysˌsɑnɑ/, [ˈyçdys̠ˌs̠ɑ̝nɑ̝]
- Rhymes: -ɑnɑ
- Syllabification(key): yh‧dys‧sa‧na
- Hyphenation(key): yhdys‧sana
Noun
[edit]yhdyssana
- (grammar) compound, compound word (word composed of two or more stems, especially without additional morphological adaptation)
Usage notes
[edit]In Finnish, all compounds are spelled as closed compounds or hyphenated compounds (per the rules described here), never as open compounds. As a consequence, the term yhdyssana is sometimes mistaken to exclude the latter (despite the fact that they do exist in English), and open compounds may instead be - likewise mistakenly - referred to as sanaliitto, which in reality means “phrase”, “set phrase” or “fixed phrase”.
