[edit]Borrowed from Italian Agrigento, from Latin Agrigentum, possibly from the root words ager (“field”) and gēns (“clan, kin”), but more likely to be a corruption of Ancient Greek Ἀκράγᾰντᾰ (Akráganta), accusative of Ἀκράγᾱς (Akrágās), from ἄκρος (ákros, “at the edge”).
