Borrowed from Italian Ajaccio, from Corsican Aiacciu, Old Italian Addiazzo, corresponding to Medieval Latin Adiacium; possibly from Tuscan Italian agghiacciu (sheep pen), or from a derivative of Byzantine Greek ἀγαθός (agathós, good fortune, mooring); related to Agde.

Borrowed from Corsican Aiacciu, Old Italian Addiazzo, corresponding to Medieval Latin Adiacium; possibly from Tuscan Italian agghiacciu (sheep pen), or from a derivative of Byzantine Greek ἀγαθός (agathós, good fortune, mooring) (cf. also Occitan Agde). There are also early 7th century Byzantine sources that mention a settlement Ἀγιάτιον (Agiátion).
