Etymology

Borrowed from Dutch actie (stock), from Middle Dutch actie (legal claim), from Latin actio. Doublet of Aktion. An earlier borrowing in the sense “legal claim” remained restricted to north-western Germany. In Dutch itself, both of the mentioned senses are obsolete.
