Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Dutch actie (stock), from Middle Dutch actie (legal claim), from Latin āctiō. Doublet of Aktion and Action.

An earlier borrowing in the sense “legal claim” remained restricted to north-western Germany. In Dutch itself, both of the mentioned senses are obsolete.
